Magura is a notable winery established in 1967, located in Bulgaria with a production capacity of 2 million litres of wine. Recently changing ownership to Eurohold, it is undergoing significant renovations, although half of the winery still operates in its traditional form, featuring 73 old concrete tanks. Historically, much of their wine was produced for the Russian market.
The vineyards span just over 100 hectares, emphasizing white varieties in the northwest and reds in the south, cultivating 25 different grape types. The current winemaker has been at the helm for 8 years, while a new consultant is refining the wine selections.
A unique aspect of Magura is its integration with the famous Magura caves, with 200 meters of tunnels extending into the hillside. The winery’s labels reflect this heritage with designs that feature ancient cave paintings and bats, highlighting both the historical and natural significance of the region.
In terms of quality, recent vintages suggest a notable improvement from older offerings, indicating that Magura is a winery gaining momentum in the industry.
