By | 2 December 2025

Anne Krebiehl MW recently attended an exclusive dinner at the Ritz in Paris to mark the release of the 2004 Cristal Vinothèque from Champagne Louis Roederer. The event highlighted the timeless elegance of this storied Champagne, underscored by CEO Frédéric Rouzaud’s comments on the wine’s deep connection to time and patience.

Rouzaud emphasized that the 2004 Cristal pays homage to “time,” being crafted with a careful approach that embraces the luxury of aging. The cellar master, Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, elaborated on the exceptional terroir, pointing out that the cool, dry growing conditions of 2004—punctuated by a wet August and a sunny September—were pivotal for the vintage’s development.

The 2004 Cristal Vinothèque combines 57% Pinot Noir and 43% Chardonnay, cultivated from select grand cru sites. The wine aged for nine years on lees and an additional six years in bottle before its release. This lengthy maturation contributes to a complex flavor profile, showcasing a remarkable youthful quality despite its age.

Krebiehl described the nose as having a youthful smoldering flintiness, with notes evolving to reveal smoky, briny oyster shell and lemon confit. The palate impresses with sleekness and depth, showcasing immense saltiness and fine bubbles, ultimately creating a deeply satisfying experience.

The 2004 Cristal Vinothèque Rosé, composed of 56% Pinot Noir and 44% Chardonnay, follows a similar meticulous process. The nose is characterized by creamy rose petals and vibrant peach, leading to a palate that’s delicate yet profound. Combined with salty foods, the wine reveals layers of fruitiness that contribute to its ageless beauty.

Both expressions of the 2004 Cristal Vinothèque are celebrated for their finesse and elegance, embodying the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication of the Louis Roederer estate.
