Burgundy Expands Its Horizons: New Premier Cru Sites Approved in the Mâconnais

By | 9 December 2024

Premier cru status has been awarded to four Chardonnay vineyard sites in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy, specifically in the Pouilly-Vinzelles and Pouilly-Loché appellations, starting with the 2024 vintage. This recognition marks a significant milestone for the Mâconnais, emphasizing its rise in the wine world.

The newly designated premier cru climats are:

  • Les Longeays (7.5 hectares) – Pouilly-Vinzelles
  • Le Pétaux (2.76 hectares) – Pouilly-Vinzelles
  • Les Quarts (12.45 hectares) – Pouilly-Vinzelles
  • Les Mûres (7.09 hectares) – Pouilly-Loché

The region is gaining recognition after years of being overlooked, having previously received a similar status in 2020 for 22 sites in the Pouilly-Fuissé area.

Industry leaders have described these four climats as "gems of the Mâconnais," highlighting their unique qualities derived from clay and limestone soils. Achieving this premier cru status took nearly two decades, navigating the complexities of France’s appellation system.

Production regulations for these premier cru sites include a ban on herbicides—a first in Burgundy for such climats. The grapes must be hand-harvested, and yields are capped at 58 hectolitres per hectare. Additionally, wines must age for at least a year following harvest and can only be sold after July 15.

The Mâconnais area has become attractive to prominent growers from the Côte d’Or, drawn by the potential for high-quality, single-vineyard wines that offer better value compared to the pricier Côte d’Or wines. Wine professionals see this region as comparable to Piedmont, thanks to its terrain and quality offerings.
