Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Margaret River, Australia
With an alcohol content of 14.5%, this marks the 50th release of Vasse Felix’s Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine crafted continuously since 1972. Vasse Felix is notable for being one of the pioneering wineries in the region, which was established in 1967. The wine spends 17 months maturing in French oak, with 37% of the barrels being new. The result is a finely structured, age-worthy Cabernet that presents aromas of mint, eucalyptus, and a hint of coconut alongside red berries and subtle blackcurrant. On the palate, it’s focused and vibrant, showcasing crisp blackcurrant and notes of red cherry and cranberry, complemented by some fine tannins. These tannins maintain freshness, enhanced by lively acidity. The wine demonstrates remarkable balance and liveliness, with the eucalyptus and green notes harmonizing beautifully. With adequate cellaring, this could emerge as a classic Australian wine. Notably, it steers clear of overripeness and a pronounced sweet fruit profile. 94/100 (Available in the UK from Majestic Wine, priced at £34.99 or £26.44 when bought as part of a mixed six.)
