Exploring Bocca di Lupo Arso 2020: The Rise of the Super-Puglian Wine

By | 22 February 2025

Bocca di Lupo’s Arso 2020 emerges as a pivotal wine for the region of Puglia, aiming to redefine the area’s reputation for producing overly ripe and heavy wines. Winemaker Vito Palumbo, representing Antinori’s estate in Castel del Monte, underlines the goal of showcasing freshness and balance with this inaugural Cabernet Franc release, sourced from vines planted in 2010.

Historically, Puglia has been associated with bulk wine production. The collaboration between the Palumbo family and Antinori took off in the 1990s, following a partnership that sought to bring higher-quality wines to this region. Initially, Aglianico and Fiano were focal grape varieties, but recent efforts have been directed towards creating a distinguished Cabernet Franc, reflecting both the local terroir and the winemaking standards established by Antinori.

The Arso 2020, which undergoes aging in new Remond barriques, strikes a fine balance between ripeness and freshness, achieving a polished finish. The estate’s unique calcareous soil contributes to the wine’s character while promoting the desired elegant profile that Palumbo aspires to establish.

The choice of Cabernet Franc over more traditional regional varieties was driven by its suitability for the land and the ambition to produce a wine that speaks to an international audience while still embodying local qualities. The winemaking approach emphasizes gentle extraction and careful barrel selection to ensure a refined final product.

In tasting, the Arso 2020 reveals deep aromas of black cherries, dark chocolate, and hints of herbs, supported by a plush, velvety texture. With an ABV of 14.5%, the wine showcases a rich complexity balanced by refreshing acidity, encapsulating the essence of a "Super-Puglian."

Overall, Arso 2020 makes a compelling case for Puglia’s evolving winemaking landscape, demonstrating that innovative approaches and international grape varieties can find a harmonious place alongside local traditions.
