Based in Brda, Slovenia, on the Italian border, the Bjana project is gaining recognition for its sparkling wines. Founded by Miran and Petra Sirk in 1990 during a time of financial hardship, the project slowly expanded thanks to Miran’s previous job as a slot machine manager. He invested his earnings into Bjana, growing production from 500 bottles in its first year to over 100,000 bottles today.
Their journey took a significant step in 2020 with the construction of a new tasting room and cellar, completed within a year despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The couple also acquired a historic cellar in Maribor dating back to 1208, which was restored in stages after being reclaimed following Slovenia’s independence.
Bjana manages 10 hectares of rented vineyards, which are cared for by growers per their guidance. This strategy of spreading out vineyards across 12 plots helps mitigate risk from potential hail damage. The focus is primarily on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as they have phased out the local grape Rebula, which posed challenges in balancing body and acidity.
Miran plans to plant an additional 2 hectares of Pinot Noir in cooler, shaded areas to adapt to the Mediterranean climate. His approach diverges from traditional methods, emphasizing the creation of sparkling wines that highlight energy and freshness, rather than imitating the heavier styles of Champagne.
