I recall my first encounter with Central Otago Pinot Noir during a tasting in London in 2003. The experience included a notable 1992 Rippon and a pre-Nigel Felton Road Block 3 that left me moderately impressed. However, after visiting the region seven years later, I became an avid fan and have returned frequently since.

Here’s my curated selection of some of the best Pinot Noirs from Central Otago:

The crib sheet concept serves as my personal insights on noteworthy wine themes, drawing from extensive travel and tasting experiences. Each recommendation comes with a confidence percentage to reflect my certainty based on familiarity with the region, acknowledging that I may have missed some producers or wines.

Central Otago Pinot Noir Recommendations

  • Rippon (Notably, I have a soft spot for Tinker’s Field)
  • Felton Road (Everything is excellent here; don’t miss Bannockburn, especially Block 3)
  • Prophet’s Rock Home Block (Watch out for their collaboration with François Millet, Antipodes)
  • Burn Cottage Vineyard
  • Amisfield (Especially recommended is the RKV bottling)
  • Gibbston Valley (Look for School House in particular)
  • Terra Sancta Special Release First Vines
  • Two Paddocks The Last Chance Alexandra
  • Wild Irishman Doctors Flat Vineyard
  • Atiku A1 Black Label
  • Folding Hill Orchard Block
  • Doctor’s Flat
  • Maude Mt Maude Reserve
  • Quartz Reef (Check for the Royal Series Anna von Tirol)
  • Rockburn Seven Barrels (From Gibbston)

These selections exemplify the region’s diverse offerings and commendable quality, making Central Otago Pinot Noir a must-try for any wine enthusiast looking to explore exceptional varietals.
