Discovering Hickinbotham: Exceptional Wines from McLaren Vale’s Unique Terroir

The Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard is a renowned site in South Australia’s McLaren Vale, boasting a rich viticultural history that dates back to 1858, although the current vineyard was established in 1971 by Alan David Hickinbotham. Situated at high elevations ranging from 220 to 256 meters, this location stands out, primarily due to Alan’s foresight in recognizing its potential for quality wine production.

The Hickinbotham family has played a pivotal role in the Australian wine industry. Alan’s father was the first lecturer in wine science at Roseworthy, while his brother Ian revolutionized winemaking by introducing techniques such as malolactic fermentation to the country. Ian’s son, Stephen Hickinbotham, was also a distinguished figure in the industry until his tragic passing in 1986.

After more than four decades of family ownership, the vineyard was sold to the Jackson family in 2012. Prior to this, the grapes were primarily sold to renowned wineries like Penfolds and Clarendon Hills, with the Hickinbotham label appearing only on a few select wines.

Under the Jackson family’s stewardship, Hickinbotham began producing its own wines in 2012, crafting Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Cabernet Shiraz blend using old terraced plantings. Since 2019, the vineyard has embraced biodynamic farming practices under the guidance of Michael Lane.

The team of winemakers includes Christopher Carpenter, who focuses on Bordeaux varieties, and Peter Fraser, who specializes in Rhône varieties. They work closely with on-site winemaker Guillaume Camougrand. The vineyard’s 70 hectares of vines were initially dry grown, but they have since installed irrigation for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The site’s geology is fairly uniform, featuring soils that consist of siltstone and are known to retain moisture effectively. This unique geological background aids in maintaining the health and productivity of the vineyard.

The Hickinbotham wines have evolved over time. Initially characterized by a pronounced oak presence, the current oak regime is now composed of 40-50% new barrels from classic Bordeaux cooperages. The wines produced today reflect a balance of richness and finesse.
