Argentina: The Emerging Vinous Powerhouse of South America

By | 28 July 2025

Argentina has solidified its reputation as a vinous powerhouse in South America, showcasing its strength at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA). The country achieved a remarkable increase in top-tier medals (95+ points), obtaining seven Platinum awards, including two prestigious Best in Show, and 37 Gold medals. Moreover, it garnered 195 Silver medals throughout the event.

A noteworthy highlight from this year’s results was the achievement of a Gold medal by a 100% varietal Criolla for the first time in DWWA history. This particular wine, crafted by Durigutti Family Winemakers, is a Criolla Chica from Las Compuertas, Mendoza. Judges were captivated by its blend of red berries, eucalyptus, and mint, complemented by a refreshing acidity and a smoky finish. Historically, Criolla grapes formed the backbone of Argentina’s vineyards, representing about 90% before being overshadowed by international varieties. The revival of the Criolla exemplifies a deep connection to the country’s viticultural heritage.

Durigutti brothers, Héctor and Pablo, also saw success with two other wines achieving Platinum status. Their Tinto del Pueblo is a blend dominated by Malbec, while Proyecto Las Compuertas showcases heritage vines cultivated since 1914. Héctor emphasized the project’s dedication to preserving Argentina’s unique viticultural heritage and sharing it globally.

The emergence of high-altitude vineyards was another highlight, particularly in the Uco Valley’s Gualtallary region. The Best in Show wines were both sourced from this area, showcasing top-quality reds. The Pionero from Bemberg Estate and the Single Vineyard Malbec from Bodega Rutini demonstrated exceptional characteristics attributed to the region’s climate, with both wines receiving acclaim for their structure and flavor.

Judges acknowledged the impact of altitude on the wines, particularly the herbal notes that enhance the Malbec varieties. They noted a trend towards reduced oak aging, with many top wines being produced in stainless steel or concrete, allowing the natural fruit characteristics to shine.

Value also played a significant role in this year’s awards, with eight Golds recognized as Value Golds, highlighting the quality-to-price ratio of Argentinian wines. Regional Chair Paz Levinson noted that while Argentinian wines may not be the cheapest, their quality and craftsmanship provide a compelling argument for continued investment in this wine-producing nation.

The results from DWWA 2025 celebrate Argentina’s diverse offerings and rich viticultural history, positioning the country as a leader in the global wine industry.
