Jean-Paul Thévenet is regarded as a pioneer among the natural wine producers in Beaujolais, part of a movement that began in the 1980s. Along with fellow producers, often referred to as the "gang of four," he played a crucial role in developing the principles of natural winemaking. Under the mentorship of Marcel Lapierre, Thévenet worked to restore the health of his vineyards and produced his first natural wine in 1981, ultimately perfecting his technique over the following years.
Now, his son Charly has joined him at the family domaine, bringing new energy and ideas, particularly through the acquisition of additional vineyards in Regnié. Together, they adhere to the Chauvet guidelines for winemaking, employing a technique of cool carbonic maceration followed by fermentation in used Burgundy barrels. They use minimal sulfites, ensuring the wines maintain their authentic character.
Recent wines from their collection have received high praise:
- Jean-Paul et Charly Thévenet Morgon 2021 displays elegant, mineral red fruits with a score of 94/100.
- Jean-Paul et Charly Thévenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2021, made from older vines, is highlighted for its pure stone-laced cherry fruit, earning an impressive 95/100.
- Jean-Paul et Charly Thévenet Régnié Grain & Granit 2021, sourced from very old vines, showcases a refined palate with floral notes and exceptional elegance, also scoring 95/100.
Thévenet’s legacy in natural wine continues to influence and inspire many in the winemaking community, reflecting not only his skills but also a broader movement towards sustainability and authenticity in viticulture.
