Discovering Swerwer: An Exciting Wine Producer from South Africa’s Swartland Region

By | 31 January 2025

Jasper Wickens began his journey in the world of wine during his university days in Stellenbosch, South Africa, where he worked at Zevenwacht to support himself. There, he met Adi Badenhorst, who became a pivotal figure in his career. In 2009, when Adi set up in Swartland, he brought Jasper on as a winemaker.

During this transformative period in Swartland, known for its collaborative atmosphere and innovative wine production, Jasper had the opportunity to work alongside the renowned Eben Sadie. His international experience grew when he ventured to Spain, assisting Eben with his Priorat project and collaborating with Bryan MacRobert in Rioja.

In 2012, Jasper launched Swerwer, initially a homebrew project crafted in Adi’s cellar. A few years later, he met Franziska Schreiber, who had recently taken over Waterval Farm, her family’s vineyard business located in Paardeberg. Their friendship blossomed, leading to an offer of grapes and eventually marriage in 2016. By 2018, Jasper had left Badenhorst, and his wines were being produced in a renovated 100-year-old winery on the farm.

The label of his wine brand, "Swerwer," translates to "wanderer" in Afrikaans. Jasper explains that the design, featuring telephone poles and wires, symbolizes the essential connections in life, while swallows illustrate the freedom of movement.
