Into the Midnight Black: A Tasting of Single-Quinta Vintage Ports
A recent tasting of 36 single-quinta Vintage Ports from prominent producers highlighted some outstanding examples in the category. Conducted by Richard Mayson, Simon Field MW, and Andrew Jefford, the tasting took stock of these unique wines, which are known for their exceptional character and the complexity they offer.
Among the standout entries was the Quinta do Vesúvio 2022 (20% ABV), receiving a score of 94. This wine showcased a deep black color with an aromatic profile that included dark fruits, flowers, and a hint of tobacco and pepper. Its palate displayed velvety tannins and a well-integrated spirit.
The Cockburn’s Quinta dos Canais 2018 also shone with a score of 93, noted for its impressive density and rich fruit flavors of blackcurrant and blackberry, layered with spice hints.
The Graham’s Quinta dos Malvedos 2018 achieved a score of 92. It was described as bold and densely fruit-forward, with robust tannins supporting a lush composition that promised longevity.
Highlights continued with Quinta do Vale Meão 2021 scoring an 88, offering a more understated approach with elegant violet and blueberry notes, and a finely-tuned mouthfeel.
In addition to these standout performances, various other vintages were assessed, displaying a range of scores from 85 to 94. Wines from Dow’s, Sandeman, Ramos Pinto, and Taylor’s, among others, were also compared, emphasizing the various qualities brought to light through this tasting.
The tasting underscored the diversity and complexity inherent in single-quinta Vintage Ports, confirming their place in the pantheon of fine wines. Each selection not only represented its vineyard’s terroir but also carried the unique imprint of its vintage, making them worthy of attention for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
