Discovering Tomcsányi: The Essence of Natural Wines from Somló, Hungary

By | 21 September 2025

I recently met with Árpád Tomcsányi to taste a selection of his wines, which are crafted from three hectares of biodynamically farmed vines located on the western banks of Somló hill, Hungary. The property was originally acquired by his parents, and Tomcsányi began his winemaking journey in 2016 while balancing a career in filmmaking.

Here are some highlights from the tasting:

  • Tomcsányi Chardonnay 2023 Somló, Hungary: This wine features stony and lively characteristics, with notes of apple and pear. It possesses a nice weight and a bit of mineral flavor, ultimately showcasing lovely purity. Rated 92/100.

  • Tomcsányi Olaszrizling NV Somló, Hungary: A blend of the 2022 and 2023 vintages, it’s fresh and invigorating with a juicy intensity and stony undertones. The high acidity adds to its appeal. Rated 92/100.

  • Tomcsányi Juhfark 2022 Somló, Hungary: Sourced from 12-year-old vines on basaltic soils, this wine is slightly cloudy and brimming with lemon and pear flavors. Its salty finish, along with a vibrant density of fruit, gives it a fine and mineral-rich profile. Rated 94/100.

  • Tomcsányi Szivhangok 2023 Somló, Hungary: This unique blend of Kékfrankos, Syrah, and Merlot offers a bright cherry red color with supple, juicy characteristics coupled with nice acidity. Rated 91/100.

  • Tomcsányi Syrah 2022 Somló, Hungary: A fresh and linear wine marked by pure red cherries with a hint of pepper and ample flesh. Its bright character makes it quite delightful. Rated 92/100.
