Champagne Giraud 2017 Aÿ Grand Cru Argonne: A Celebration of Craftsmanship

The release of Champagne Henri Giraud’s 2017 vintage of the Aÿ Grand Cru Argonne marks a significant milestone—the 400th anniversary of the family’s vine stewardship in Aÿ. Initially bottling wines post-World War II, Henri Giraud, followed by his son Claude, paved the way for the brand’s prominence, introducing innovations such as the oak-aged Fût de Chêne Cuvée. The current generation, led by Emmanuelle Giraud and her brother-in-law Sébastien Le Golvet, has continued this proud tradition. During a recent London event, Sébastien presented the new release alongside matured magnums from earlier years (2004, 2011, and 2016).

The Craft of Wine and Oak

The Aÿ Grand Cru Argonne is crafted exclusively from fruit grown in Aÿ, typically comprising 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. Uniquely, it is fermented in new 228-liter barrels sourced from the historic Argonne forest, renowned for its tightly grained oak. Sébastien carefully selects the trees for harvesting and oversees the aging process of the barrels, enhancing the wine’s complexity. This meticulous attention extends to the picking of grapes, which is determined by flavor rather than analytical metrics. Moreover, the juice is divided into several press fractions fermented and aged separately, capturing distinct expressions of the terroir.

The 2017 vintage showcases a harmonious balance between oak and wine, with the oak influence contributing to a creamy, fragile nuance rather than overwhelming vanilla flavors. This delicacy is symbolized by the gold leaf applied by hand on each bottle, reflecting the tenderness and fragility of the wine.
