“You would literally be the first person in the world to taste this wine outside of the members of the Rothschild family and the internal team.” Those were the enticing words that led to an unforgettable dinner with Guillaume Lété, the chief winemaker (chef de cave) of Champagne Barons de Rothschild. Just 22 days ago, I had the privilege of tasting the innovative, oak-vinified 2019 Le Grand Clos before its official unveiling today in Champagne to a select group of importers, ahead of its market release in September.
As The World of Fine Wine reports, Champagne Barons de Rothschild is celebrating its 20th anniversary, a milestone marked by the launch of the new cuvée and the inauguration of its newly refurbished vinification center in Vertus, within the Côte des Blancs region. This facility, housed in a stone building dating back to 1874, has been renovated over the past decade to restore its historic vaulted cellars while integrating modern winemaking technology.
Le Grand Clos is not just a new wine; it represents a significant undertaking in the world of Champagne. A Vintage Blanc de Blancs, it comes from a unique plot of 40-year-old Chardonnay, situated directly next to the cellar and characterized by rich, chalky soil. Originally known as Clos Prieur, the Rothschild family purchased this prime vineyard in 2013, but it had always been blended until 2019, when it was vinified separately for the first time.
Champagne Barons de Rothschild, formed by three branches of the Rothschild family, has maintained a relatively low profile despite its ambitious beginnings in 2005. The venture initially faced skepticism from growers, who wondered about the family’s motivations in entering the prestigious Champagne scene. However, by cultivating relationships and hiring local talent, including the young Lété, they have garnered respect over the years.
Under Lété’s leadership, the house has expanded from a mere 50,000 bottles in its early production to an impressive 600,000, with a cap set at 800,000 bottles. This meticulous scaling reflects a commitment to quality rather than quantity, contrasting with some competitors in the industry.
The philosophy of Champagne Barons de Rothschild emphasizes a terroir-driven approach, prioritizing the characteristics of their vineyards, sustainable practices, and innovative techniques in vinification. The house currently collaborates with 20 partner growers covering a significant area within the prestigious crus surrounding the Champagne region.
The 2019 Le Grand Clos, available in just 1,788 bottles, is a testament to this philosophy. Comprising 100% Chardonnay, it showcases a meticulous vinification process that includes barrel aging and extended lees contact. Lété describes the wine as possessing the volume and generosity reminiscent of great white Burgundies, yet with a controlled, precise palate.
Retailing for €690 per bottle in an elegant oak gift box, the 2019 Le Grand Clos is designed for allocation and reflects the grand ambition of the Rothschild family to create a prestigious Champagne house that respects tradition while embracing innovation.
