80 Years of Excellence: Celebrating Kopke Tawny as an Act of Devotion

By | 6 March 2026

Nicolas and Cristiano Kopke, originally from Hamburg, fled the devastation of The Thirty Years War to Portugal, where they founded their namesake company in 1638. This predates other notable Port producers, such as Dow and Taylor. Initially focused on distribution, the Kopke family transitioned to production in the 18th century, establishing an impressive stock of aging casks that today is being recognized as a valuable asset.

In the 1970s, the company became part of the Sogevinus Group, but in 2025, the brand was revived to represent its premium offerings. The Kopke Group now includes several other Houses and over 200 hectares of vineyards in the Douro Valley, emphasizing a strong commitment to quality.

Kopke has been producing high-quality cask-aged Tawny Ports, and recent market shifts have encouraged an expansion of their offerings. The introduction of the 80-Year-Old Tawny category in 2025 followed the earlier addition of the 50-Year-Old category in 2022. This new tier provides a more extensive range for connoisseurs, although curiosity arises regarding the omission of the 60- and 70-year-old categories.

The fictitious age of 80 years in the Tawny designation reflects a blend of casks that includes some aged back to the 1940s and rare selections from the 19th century. The quality of wine derives from meticulous aging in 550-liter casks, with the ‘angel share’ estimated to be around 90% over the decades. The end product is dark, rich, and complex, offering a profile that, while maintaining high acidity, mimics the elegance of historic Madeira wines.

Carlos Alves, the Master Blender for Kopke, describes the 80-Year-Old Tawny as a blend of "time, tradition, and devotion," bottling only 1,200 liters of this exquisite wine. Priced accordingly, it sets a premium expectation for collectors and investors alike, providing robustness suitable for aging, albeit its market acceptance remains to be tested.

Tasting notes reveal a wine with mahogany hues and an inviting bouquet of tangerine, peat, and incense. The palate surprises with a harmonious tension between sweetness and acidity, showcasing a raw intensity and a refreshing citric finish. Rated highly for its complexity, this product is poised to represent a significant addition to the luxury Port market.

Available in the UK at a price of £550 per bottle (before taxes), the Kopke 80 Years Old Tawny exemplifies the heritage and craftsmanship of one of the oldest Port producers, marking a notable step in the evolution of high-end wines.
