Bordeaux’s celebrated 2016 vintage has recently gained renewed attention, marking a decade since a growing season that kept winemakers on their toes. Over 80 Bordeaux wines from this vintage were showcased at a ’10 Years On’ tasting organized by Bordeaux Index in London, which saw participation from producers, critics, and journalists. This included notable Left Bank estates and esteemed Right Bank names like Lafleur and Petrus.
Bordeaux 2016 reds are perceived as modern benchmarks, known for their robust aging potential attributed to high tannin levels and fresh fruitiness. The early promise of this vintage resulted in high scores during the en primeur tastings in spring 2017, which continued to receive positive feedback when reviewed 18 months later. Additionally, some regions reported record yields—the highest since 2006.
During the tasting, enthusiasm among producers remained palpable. Omri Ram, the winemaker at Château Lafleur, asserted that he views the 2016 vintage as one of the greatest ever made in Bordeaux, positing that the wine’s structure and energy suggest it is still maturing.
However, the path to acclaim was not straightforward. Initially, the wet spring raised concerns due to mildew pressure, prompting fears of a disappointing vintage. But the arrival of hot and dry summer weather transformed prospects, leading to exceptional outcomes.
Ram characterized the 2016 season as the beginning of a new era for Bordeaux, moving away from traditional views that relied heavily on singular weather patterns. He noted that this vintage presents a new complexity, with vineyard management playing an essential role in achieving success.
As the 10-year milestone approaches, many wines are still described as tight and evolving, but overall quality is recognized. A recent expert panel tasting found numerous Médoc 2016 reds to have high extraction, and several wines received prestigious accolades, including a perfect score for Château Latour 2016.
Despite challenges in the Bordeaux market over recent years, there is optimism for the 2016 vintage’s demand, especially with its perceived value compared to similar exceptional years. Experts indicate a strong interest in purchasing these wines, suggesting that they may become increasingly sought after.
The 2016 vintage not only represents a significant moment in Bordeaux’s winemaking narrative but also serves as a potential herald of a new golden age for the region.
