Emiliana is a notable winery located in Chile’s Los Robles region of Colchagua. My visit there was guided by winemaker Noelia Orts, who shared the winery’s compelling story.
Originally part of Concha y Toro until 1987, Emiliana is primarily owned by the Guilisasti family, who still maintain substantial ties to Concha y Toro. In 1998, José Guilisasti sought a less invasive approach to winemaking, leading him on a journey to discover the benefits of organic farming. Conversations with figures like Mike Benziger and Aland York in California, alongside insights from consultant Alvaro Espinoza, convinced José that sustainable practices could yield quality fruit without the need for extensive chemical interventions.
With initial backing from the family’s directors, José was allowed to experiment with organic farming on a small scale at the Los Robles vineyard, which spans 600 hectares with 100 hectares of vines. Notably secluded, Los Robles is conducive to organic practices, benefiting from its forest ecosystem that promotes biodiversity and has a Mediterranean-like climate with well-drained, decomposed granite soils.
Under the guidance of Alvaro and biodynamic consultant Alan York, Emiliana achieved organic certification by 2001, releasing its first vintage of Coyam that same year. The forest surrounding the estate plays a critical role in water retention and erosion prevention.
The transition to organic farming was challenging, with initial yields suffering before rebounding after several years. Today, Emiliana boasts 1,000 hectares of vines and continues to take steps toward sustainability, recently receiving ROC (Regenerative Organic Certification). Their approach includes planting permanent cover crops to enhance soil health and biodiversity while countering pest challenges with precise tillage strategies.
Their composting techniques also reflect careful agricultural practices, utilizing local resources like cow manure and grape marc, and adapting materials based on regional availability.
