Katherine Cole Explores: Can Wine Regions Protect Us from Wildfires?

By | 19 January 2026

As wildfires threaten the wine industry, the focus has typically been on the destructive aftermath, but there’s a larger question that warrants discussion: Can wine regions develop strategies to protect themselves and the surrounding communities from wildfires?

Napa Valley serves as a case study for this hopeful perspective. Following the catastrophic fires of 2017 and 2020, Napa has shifted its approach from victim to proactive defender. Under the leadership of Joseph Nordlinger, CEO of Napa Firewise, efforts have been made to combat two critical issues that hinder resilience in fire-prone areas: a lack of coordination among response efforts and a pervasive sense of complacency. Nordlinger’s team has established a shared-services hub in Napa County that streamlines equipment, planning, and funding. This initiative aims to eliminate the competition among various local Fire Safe Councils for necessary funding, thereby enhancing the county’s overall fire resilience.

The concept of a coordinated approach could provide a blueprint not only for Napa but for other regions facing similar threats. By breaking down silos and fostering collaboration, wine regions can ensure that they are better prepared for the inevitable challenges posed by wildfires.
