Hugh Johnson Reflects on Solidarity with Resilient Growers Battling English Weather

By | 10 November 2025

Hugh Johnson expresses his solidarity with courageous English wine growers who tackle the challenging weather conditions in the region. He highlights that the English wine category that has garnered the most acclaim to date is sparkling wine, which is often on the pricier side.

Despite the success of English sparkling wines, Johnson notes that still whites have yet to establish themselves as exemplary models, while red wines frequently struggle to achieve full ripeness and are mostly seen as light and thin. However, he acknowledges the potential of Essex’s Pinot Noir, particularly from the Danbury ridge, which overlooks the Crouch River valley. These wines exhibit the qualities one expects from fine red Burgundy, proving that there is room for excellent wines even in the face of unpredictable weather.

In his reflections, Johnson emphasizes the need for appreciation and understanding among wine lovers, suggesting that celebrating the produce of brave growers is commendable. He suggests that while it may currently be difficult to find standout models among still wines, the determination of local producers should not go unrecognized, as they continue to innovate and adapt.
