Maison Krug has teamed up with esteemed composer Max Richter to unveil a unique project titled "Every Note Counts," which transforms the experience of enjoying wine into a musical journey inspired by three cuvées from the celebrated 2008 vintage.
This initiative continues Krug’s tradition of blending music and Champagne, having previously collaborated with various artists to interpret the essence of their cuvées through sound. Richter, renowned for his innovative fusion of classical and electronic music, has composed distinct pieces to enhance the narrative of three specific Krug Champagnes.
Each composition corresponds to a particular cuvée, enhancing not just the tasting experience but also conveying the character of each wine. The works include:
-
Clarity: A piece for soloist crafted around Krug, Clos d’Ambonnay 2008, made from a limited walled plot of Pinot Noir.
-
Ensemble: A chamber music piece inspired by Krug 2008, meant to evoke the optimal conditions of that vintage year.
-
Sinfonia: This piece draws from the Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème edition, a blend that encompasses the 2008 vintage and includes a selection from 127 wines spanning back to 1990.
Krug has labeled this collection as "Krug from Soloist to Orchestra in 2008 (Act 2)," with only 200 cases produced. The accompanying pieces will be released in February 2026, alongside a documentary that chronicles the collaboration between Krug and Richter, capturing their journey from the vineyards of Reims to a recording studio in Oxfordshire.
This initiative reflects a longstanding connection between Champagne and music, dating back to Krug’s founding in 1843. Olivier Krug, a sixth-generation member of the house, has previously expressed how music has historically intertwined with their family’s understanding of Champagne, likening the roles within the business to that of a conductor.
Beyond Krug’s approach, experts have been exploring the ways music may influence wine tasting experiences. Research by Susan Lin MW highlights how different musical tracks can enhance the sensory perception of wine.
