A single bottle of Tequila Enemigo’s recently launched Enemigo Finito, matured in a special cask from a prestigious Bordeaux château, has fetched over $9,000 at auction. Specifically, the bottle sold for $9,375 (approximately £6,700) at Sotheby’s, surpassing its pre-sale estimated price of $5,000.
All 300 bottles of the Enemigo Finito 2024 vintage, which is a high-end Extra Añejo tequila, have either been sold or allocated to collectors. Initially priced at £1,050 each, these bottles quickly gained attention among aficionados.
Sotheby’s, noted for its luxury goods, also described this tequila as a ‘paradigm-shifting Extra Añejo.’ The cask used for maturation was sourced from a top estate in Bordeaux, although the exact vineyard remains undisclosed. However, it is believed to be associated with one of the first growths from the 1855 Classification, renowned for producing exceptional wines.
Each of the 300 bottles is unique, with the sale representing bottle number eight. Tequila Enemigo co-founder Robin Clough emphasized the creative decision to use a premier cru barrel, highlighting that this offering represents both a collector’s item and a significant advancement in tequila production standards.
In the spirits industry, it has become increasingly common to age or finish beverages in barrels previously used for wine. For instance, Patrón offers its luxury ‘Gran Patrón Burdeos’ tequila, aged in vintage Bordeaux wine barrels. Additionally, Codigo 1530’s Origen Extra Añejo is aged for six years in Napa Valley Cabernet barrels.
Scotch whisky producers also tap into wine cask finishes, with Glenmorangie’s recent launch highlighting whiskies matured in barrels sourced from renowned wine-growing regions.
