Discovering Excellence: Weingut Rosi Schuster and Hannes Schuster’s Journey in Austrian Wine Making

By | 22 September 2025

Hannes Schuster, who runs Weingut Rosi Schuster, is notable for crafting exceptional wines in Sankt Margarethen, located on the picturesque shores of Lake Neusiedlersee. The winery, named after his mother Rosi, was established by his parents and has been operated by Hannes since 2007, after his father’s passing.

The winery’s vineyards, spread across 17 hectares, predominantly lie on the Rusterberg hillside, encompassing villages like Oslip, Oggau, and Rust. Among these, Hannes cultivates 4 hectares of Blaufränkisch and a cherished 0.5 hectares of Furmint – a grape variety that he has become passionate about. Initially facing challenges in sourcing Furmint, he eventually procured grapes from an organic grower and aims to expand his Furmint holdings in Burgenland, where this grape thrives.

Adopting organic viticulture and low-intervention winemaking practices, Hannes strives for pure expression in his wines. However, the hot year of 2022 saw him lose some vintages to volatile acidity, underscoring the challenges faced by winemakers.
