Exploring the Locus Classicus of Red Wine: A Journey Through Tradition and Terroir

Back to the classics. As we navigate the tumultuous events of 2025, from global conflicts to the rise of misinformation, the desire to retreat to the comforting embrace of the classics feels almost instinctive. In times of chaos, there’s wisdom to be found in the teachings of philosophers like Seneca, and in the storytelling of ancient playwrights like Euripides and Sophocles. These works, once popular entertainment for the masses, remind us that greatness often lies not in difficulty but in accessibility, and that profound simplicity can exist alongside complex artistry.

Wine, too, can serve as an anchor amid the turbulence. Recently, I had the pleasure of sharing a bottle of 1986 Château Lafite Rothschild Pauillac during a gathering with friends. As we marked both the 40th birthday of the wine and the 20th anniversary of renowned enologist Émile Peynaud’s passing, my friend Frank recalled his first encounter with it over three decades prior, describing the wine as "a miracle of subtlety, depth, and harmony."

The Lafite ’86 appeared almost opaque in the glass, exuding aromas of currants, mint, and resin—evidence of its maturity yet maintaining an effortless grace. Each sip revealed a narrative of dark fruits and fresh acidity, a harmonious balance that intricately showcased the muscular yet elegant tannins. It was, in essence, a beautiful expression of what red wine can achieve.

This particular vintage epitomizes classicism—not in an inaccessible or elitist sense, but as a creation that resonates with beauty and artistry that captivates everyone. Unlike the more grandiose Mouton ’86, this wine embodies a quiet elegance, reminding us that true classicism can be found in the beauty of simplicity, even amid the complexity of flavors. Its legacy may well position Lafite as a quintessential reference point for understanding the essence of red wines, providing a definitive experience for any fortunate taster.
