Veiled Vineyards Old Vine Semillon 2016 – Franschhoek, South Africa
The Veiled Vineyards Old Vine Semillon 2016 is an intriguing wine that, despite being nearly nine years old, has recently hit the market. This wine is produced from two historic vineyards established in 1942 and 1962. Notably, some of the Semillon grapes used are a varietal called gris, a genetic mutation observed within the vineyard.
This creation is the result of Andrew Johnson’s vision and is sold by Woodwinters, with a total production of just 1100 bottles. After spending ten months in barrels followed by six months in stainless steel tanks, the wine carries an alcohol content of 13.5%.
On the nose, it presents a complex bouquet combining smoky grapefruit nuances alongside hints of honey, wax, and apricot. The palate is elegantly textured, showcasing fine spices and possessing a slight graininess, which leads to a fresh and crystalline finish. The balance between the wine’s richness and its refreshing qualities is remarkable, and it continues to develop beautifully as it ages.
This Semillon has earned a score of 94/100 and is available in the UK for about £30 through Woodwinters.
