Exploring the Mâconnais: A Journey with Les Vignerons de Mancey

By | 9 August 2025

Les Vignerons de Mancey is a unique small cooperative cellar in the Mâconnais region, significantly smaller than the larger cooperatives. This structure allows them to blend wines from various plots while also producing wines from individual growers, or "cooperateurs."

The cooperative comprises around 60 growers across approximately 130 hectares of vineyards, with production varying yearly based on the number of active growers. Their annual output is about 500,000 bottles, including 60,000 bottles of Crémant. While some wine is sold to negociants, this constitutes only a small portion of their overall production.

During a visit, winemaker François Chapuis highlighted his approach to organic farming on 15 of his hectares, with a focus on Aligoté. He practices cordon royat pruning, which yields smaller bunches and enhances the freshness of the grapes. In 2023, he also introduced a unique vineyard technique called en foule sur echalas, planting eight varieties, including Syrah, resulting in their first vintage of 800 kg.
