Rob Symington Takes the Helm as Managing Director at Berry Bros & Rudd: A New Era for Symington Family Estates

By | 4 August 2025

London fine wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd (BBR) announced the appointment of Rob Symington from Symington Family Estates (SFE) as its new UK managing director, effective from September. This transition follows his role as co-CEO of SFE, where he served alongside production director Charles Symington since February 2025. Rob will retain his position as a non-executive director at SFE and its majority-owned UK importer, Fells.

His new role at BBR comes as the collaboration between SFE and BBR strengthens, particularly after their joint acquisition of Hambledon Wine Estate in 2023. Symington will oversee various aspects of BBR, including sales and marketing in the UK, and will report directly to CEO Emma Fox. This new hire is part of BBR’s broader strategy, which includes the recent expansion into the US market.

Rob’s departure from daily operations at SFE reduces the number of family members involved in managing day-to-day tasks, leaving eight family members to handle responsibilities across four Port houses and additional wine brands. Rupert Symington will take on co-CEO duties in addition to his role as chairman while Charles remains the production director. The fifth generation of Symingtons will soon assume new leadership roles in different areas, ensuring a continuation of family involvement in the business.

Rob Symington has been pivotal in advancing SFE’s positioning in sustainability, propelling the company to obtain B-Corp certification in 2019 and overseeing the recent release of its inaugural sustainability report. His efforts included significant progress in non-fortified wine production and initiatives targeting younger audiences, such as revamping the company’s fortified range for casual consumption and cocktail mixing.

SFE has also focused on enhancing its tourism offerings, with new restaurants and visitor centers established to enhance the experience for wine tourists. Rob reflects on his tenure with pride, having contributed to the company’s expansion into new wine regions and taking steps to innovate and develop their Port offerings.

Looking ahead, it will be intriguing to see how Rob’s fresh perspective will shape BBR, as he builds on the legacy of the Symington family while the remaining family members continue to enhance their operations at SFE.
