One of the most acclaimed wineries in the Alentejo region, Mouchão, has a unique history that sets it apart from its peers. I had the pleasure of tasting wines with Ian Reynolds, the owner, and winemaker Hamilton Reis.
Founded in the mid-19th century by Thomas Reynolds, Mouchão originally served as a cork estate encompassing 900 hectares, though it is now more recognized for its wines. The estate faced a tumultuous chapter during the 1974 revolution, when local residents formed a co-operative and massively disrupted the vineyards. After the property was returned to the Reynolds family in 1985/86, they embarked on a restoration journey, including the complete replanting of the vineyards while preserving the traditional winemaking practices.
