Ever since it was announced that Elaine Chukan Brown was writing a book about Californian wine, anticipation has been high. Having known Elaine for years and co-presented with her at several conferences, I was eager to see how her insights would translate into print.
The book, part of the Classic Wine Library series recently acquired by the Academie du Vin Library, truly meets the expectations set by her reputation. Unlike many titles in the series that can feel formulaic or lacking in depth, Elaine’s writing shines with passion and knowledge, creating a compelling narrative that thoughtfully frames the story of California wine in its historical and cultural context.
The first part of the book delves into the history of California’s wine industry, starting with Indigenous peoples and leading through pivotal moments such as Prohibition, the industry’s growth in the 1960s and 1970s, and the influential era of Robert Parker. She also explores the contemporary challenges facing the industry, including the impacts of social media, COVID-19, and recent wildfires.
The subsequent section, titled Where We Grow, focuses on the diverse climates and soils across California’s various wine regions. This part is artistically done, providing concise descriptions and intelligent commentary about each region, along with insightful notes on selected producers that showcase current trends and opinions.
Finally, the section titled What We’re Facing takes a forward-looking perspective on California wine. It addresses pressing issues such as climate change, social considerations, and the broader cultural significance of wine, articulating a well-rounded contemplation of the industry’s future.
The book spans 468 pages in a lightweight paperback format, ensuring that all content is valuable and engaging. For anyone interested in Californian wine, this is certainly a must-read.
