On my first night in Australia, I ventured to Pastel Wine Bar in North Adelaide after enjoying a drink at East End Cellars. Accompanied by Ali Fraquelli, who is involved with Jim Barry in Clare and co-creator of the exquisite Yarn English sparkling wine, the ambiance of Pastel was inviting, particularly on a bustling Saturday night.
The restaurant was lively, and the quality of the food truly impressed. I found myself enamored with the culinary offerings, even in a slight state of jet lag. The drink selections also did not disappoint.
I started with a bottle of Ochota Barrels A Forest Pinot Noir 2024 from the Adelaide Hills. At 12.3% alcohol, it showcased beautiful cherries and plums, complemented by a silky texture and a hint of green sappiness. This wine was well-balanced and offered finesse, earning a score of 94/100.
Next, I savored the Pare Douglas Gully Vineyard Grenache 2022 from Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. This wine, with vines dating back to 1948, presented an elegant profile at 14.5% alcohol. Its ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors were intricately layered with notes of liquorice, pepper, spice, and marzipan, resulting in a texturally fine experience. I rated it 95/100.
The evening concluded with a visit to The Exeter, wrapping up a memorable first night in Australia.
