Meet Sandridge Barton: The Exciting New Player in English Wine

By | 20 July 2025

Sandridge Barton is the new name for a renowned winery in Devon, formerly known as Sharpham, and is now making waves in the English wine scene. My affinity for this establishment dates back to 1998, when I first visited while camping nearby. It was my introduction to serious wine, guided by winemaker Duncan Schwab, who has since become an influential figure in the industry.

In 2020, the winery transitioned from Sharpham to Sandridge Barton, and while Duncan remains involved, Charlie Brown has taken over as the head winemaker. The 45-acre vineyard is situated on limestone soil and was planted between 2020 and 2023. As they strive for great quality, they’ve started sourcing grapes from their estate, achieving 100% estate fruit from the 2023 vintage onwards. This new approach allows them more control over production and pricing amidst a challenging market in the UK. Their current portfolio comprises 75% still wines and 25% sparkling wines, with all fermentations utilizing wild yeast.

During a tasting with Charlie and Duncan, I was impressed by their offerings, including:

  • Sandridge Barton Figgie Daniel Madeleine Angevine Col Fondo 2023: This wine showcases a bright and fresh character with a lovely acid line, scoring 91/100.

  • Sandridge Barton Figgie Daniel Madeleine Angevine & Pinot Blanc Col Fondo 2022: Known for its bright citrus and pear notes, this wine has a pleasing fizziness and a score of 90/100.

  • Sandridge Barton Classic Cuvée 2021: A blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, this wine presents a lively profile with hints of apple and spice (90/100).

  • Sandridge Barton Classic Cuvée Rosé 2022: This pale pink wine is bright and juicy with excellent style, earning a score of 92/100.

  • Sandridge Barton Blanc de Noirs 2020: A 100% Pinot Noir with a zero dosage, showcasing bright and tart citrus notes, rated at 90/100.

Additional offerings included a range of expressive wines such as the Dart Valley Reserve 2023, Little Bee Pinot Gris Skin Contact 2023, and East Field Pinot Noir 2022, with scores ranging from 89/100 to 92/100.

One standout preview was the new Sonny Pinot Blanc, which spent two years under flor, exhibiting tanginess and excitement.

With their innovative approach and emphasis on quality, Sandridge Barton is poised to secure its place in the spotlight of the English wine industry.
