Burgundy’s Domaine Faiveley recently celebrated its 200th anniversary with a series of festivities, including a gala dinner at the prestigious Clos de Vougeot and a historical tasting of selected vintages dating back to 1935. The event highlighted the domain’s rich heritage and its long-standing connection to the region’s vineyards, as Faiveley is one of the co-owners of the Château du Clos de Vougeot and a founding member of the Confrérie de Chevaliers du Tastevin.
To commemorate the occasion, Domaine Faiveley announced its donation of a small parcel of vines in Clos de Vougeot to the Hospices de Beaune, an institution known for its storied vineyards and commitment to social welfare since 1443. The donated parcel will yield approximately three barrels of wine annually, to be named Cuvée François Faiveley, expanding the Hospices’ notable collection of vineyards in the Côte de Nuits.
Ludivine Griveau, the technical director for the Hospices’ vineyard, expressed enthusiasm over the collaboration, which is aligned with both entities’ commitment to organic farming practices. The Hospices was certified organic for the 2024 vintage, and Domaine Faiveley is on track for organic certification for the 2025 vintage. This transition to organic farming has posed challenges, particularly in a difficult market influenced by changing import regulations and environmental conditions.
Despite these challenges, the 2023 vintage is reported to be strong in quality with substantial quantity, allowing Domaine Faiveley to manage its shipments effectively. However, they anticipate a decrease in 2024 production, prompting a cautious outlook from Eve Faiveley, who has emphasized the need for consistency in pricing even as they navigate the complexities of the market.
Domaine Faiveley’s organic farming transition has been gradual since Jérôme Flous took charge in 2007, focusing on reducing synthetic treatments and improving vineyard management. The collaboration between Faiveley and the Hospices de Beaune reinforces their mutual goals and commitment to quality winemaking, looking forward to a fruitful partnership.
