Significant Changes at Porseleinberg and Boekenhoutskloof: The Departure of Callie Louw

The winemaking scene in South Africa is witnessing a significant shift as Callie Louw, a prominent figure in the industry, prepares to leave his roles at Porseleinberg and Boekenhoutskloof. Louw has decided to venture out on his own, driven by his desire to acquire and run his own vineyard. He has secured a financial partner and purchased a farm named Uitvlugt, located on the Paardeberg foothills. The first wines from this new endeavor are anticipated to be released in 2028.

Porseleinberg’s proprietor, Marc Kent, expressed that while Louw’s departure is a loss, the legacy of Porseleinberg, which he acquired in 2009 to produce quality Syrah for Boekenhoutskloof’s Chocolate Block blend, will endure. Louw has overseen all 15 vintages from the artisanal vineyard, known for its distinctive blue-veined schist.

To fill the gap left by Louw, Eben Meiring has been promoted to his position. Meiring has been deemed ready to step into the limelight by Kent, who emphasized Meiring’s familiarity with the Porseleinberg fruit. Boekenhoutskloof’s chief winemaker, Gottfried Mocke, will broaden his role to oversee winemaking across the entire portfolio, including the vineyards Louw managed.

Additionally, Ruan van Schalkwyk, formerly with Kanonkop, will take over the winemaking responsibilities at Boekenhoutskloof’s Franschhoek cellar. The search for a new viticulturist to manage the remaining Swartland vineyards previously cared for by Louw is still ongoing.

Kent remarked that these transitions have been anticipated for some time as the team expresses a desire for growth. He concluded by wishing Louw success in his future pursuits.
