Margate, a seaside town in Kent, has gained a new reputation as “Shoreditch on Sea.” Once considered rough around the edges, the town has experienced a revival, drawing an artistic and trendy community attracted by its scenic location and affordable property prices. Alongside its cultural resurgence, Margate is emerging as a culinary destination, making it a perfect spot for day trips from London. While the train journey may be over an hour and a half, the charm of the town is worth the trip.
On my latest visit, I chose to dine at Angela’s, a cozy seafood restaurant near the waterfront. The establishment features two distinct dining areas: a small main room and a charming annex, where I sat. While the annex provided an intimate experience, I appreciated the attentive service which ensured we felt well looked after.
The menu, displayed on a blackboard reminiscent of French bistros, featured a concise selection focused exclusively on seafood. The wine list stood out for its thoughtful curation, primarily highlighting well-priced English wines. While a separate list for rarer bottles was unavailable during my visit, I managed to find two delightful bottles of English wine, both under £50.
The culinary experience at Angela’s was remarkable for its simplicity and focus on fresh seafood. Dishes were rich and buttery, such as the mackerel served on lentils with a pesto topping—deliciously straightforward. Another starter, mushrooms on toast, may have been overly rich due to the butter. The hake main course, complemented by a luxurious bisque sauce and fennel, was expertly executed.
Angela’s may not court pretension, but its commitment to quality and flavor makes it an essential dining destination. Reservations are highly recommended.
For those seeking a refreshing drink, I enjoyed a Perfect Strangers Cider from Hampshire, which features bright flavors of citrus and juicy apple, a delightful accompaniment to the meal. Additionally, a stand-out wine was the Black Book Sauvignac ‘Fragments of Time’ from Essex, praised for its texture and elegant fruit notes.
Overall, Angela’s combines casual charm with outstanding gastronomy, encapsulating the vibrant spirit of Margate’s evolving food scene. For more information, visit Angela’s website.
