Harnessing AI to Help Napa Wineries Thrive Amidst Climate Chaos

By | 24 April 2025

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being recognized as a potential ally for Napa wineries striving to navigate the uncharted waters of climate change. During a recent seminar in London, Kia Behnia, co-owner of Neotempo Wines, expressed the pressing need for wineries to adapt to the climate’s unpredictability—what he describes as "climate chaos."

Behnia elucidated that AI’s role in enhancing vineyard management could be pivotal. He envisions a future where precise data analytics not only optimizes production but ensures sustainability in the face of climate pressures. Together with Mason Earles from UC Davis, Behnia has helped develop Scout, an AI-driven tool designed to analyze vast datasets, including vine health indicators and environmental conditions.

"Think of it as an X-ray for vineyards," Behnia said, likening the tool’s ability to predict yields and detect early signs of stress. He emphasizes, however, that the technology should support, not dictate, the artistry of winemaking—a sentiment echoed amidst hesitancy about AI’s role in such a tradition-bound industry.

Matt Taylor, winemaker at Ink Grade, reinforced the idea that blending technology with sustainable farming practices could create a more resilient vineyard. His experience with organic and biodynamic methods reveals that improving soil health is crucial for helping vines withstand extreme weather events. At Ink Grade, the approach is fluid, based on the unique conditions of each vintage—reflecting a commitment to balance while respecting Napa’s heritage.

The seminar also showcased innovative wines, such as the inaugural Trailside Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, which stands as a tribute to the legendary Napa Valley wines from the 1960s and 1970s. Executive Carlton McCoy Jr. and winemaker Jeremy Seysses crafted this Cabernet as a testament to Napa’s enduring legacy.
