A Year in Tasting: Exploring the World of Champagne

By | 31 December 2024

Over the past year, The World of Fine Wine has evaluated numerous Champagnes and has compiled a selection highlighting the most notable bottles from 2024.

In October, Essi Avellan MW presented a tasting focused on Montagne de Reims Chardonnay, alongside Simon Field MW and Anthony Rose. This tasting showcased the unique characteristics of the region’s blanc de blancs, revealing exciting variations in expression. Among the top wines were those from grand cru areas like Ambonnay and Bouzy, with standout cuvées from both the exemplary 2019 and 2012 vintages.

The tasting also included more mature Champagnes, such as Pierre Paillard Les Mottelettes 2012, demonstrating the aging potential of Montagne de Reims Chardonnays. While some cuvées, like Vilmart Blanc de Blancs Les Blanches Voies, fetch higher prices (around €250), exceptional value can be found in offerings like Penet-Chardonnet’s Terroir & Sens Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs and A. Margaine L’Extra-Brut NV, priced around €65 and €40, respectively.

The Montagne de Reims wines were noted for their broader body and richer texture compared to Côte des Blancs wines. Exceptions included certain cuvées that showcased a refreshing acidity and saline quality.

In June, Tom Stevenson celebrated the 20th anniversary of The World of Fine Wine by revisiting the 2004 Champagne vintage. This year yielded a surprisingly large crop, and after a comparative tasting of historical vintages, seven cuvées stood out. Notably, Roederer Cristal Brut 2004 and Roederer Cristal Rosé Brut 2004 received top accolades for their freshness and complexity, each earning high scores for their enduring quality.

Further exploring the differences between vintages, a tasting involving the 2014 and 2015 Champagnes revealed distinct stylistic contrasts. The 2014s offered a fresher and more classic structure, while the 2015s, though polarizing, displayed remarkable potential alongside some less favorable examples.

One standout of this broader discussion was Ruinart Millésime Brut 2015, praised for its toasty complexity and delightful fruitiness, which garnered positive reviews across the board.

Lastly, a tasting of all 21 vintages of Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill allowed participants to celebrate a memorable selection reflecting the robust character of Pinot Noir. The 2002 vintage impressed with its balanced composition and evolving profile, showcasing the enduring legacy of this distinguished cuvée.

These highlights paint a picture of a dynamic year for Champagne enthusiasts, reaffirming the excitement and complexity that this esteemed beverage continues to offer.
