Uncorking Luxury: Highlights of Champagne Alfred Gratien NV

By | 4 December 2024

Champagne Alfred Gratien NV is a distinctive offering from a smaller house that produces approximately 300,000 bottles annually and is owned by the large German sparkling wine producer Henkell. This champagne stands out due to its unique aging process, where all base wines are matured in barrels sourced predominantly from the Chablisienne cooperative, having seen around four uses previously.

The blend consists of 50% Chardonnay, with equal parts of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, and notably, it doesn’t undergo malolactic fermentation. One-third reserve wines from the previous year are incorporated, along with a dosage of 9 g/litre. The champagne undergoes approximately four years of aging on the lees, and this particular bottle was disgorged in March 2024.

In terms of tasting notes, the champagne exhibits a bright and energetic profile characterized by lively lemon fruit, a hint of pear, and a vibrant acidity complemented by subtle toasty and nutty nuances. Its pristine and focused character delivers a long, finely spiced, slightly salty finish. Overall, it presents a commendable non-vintage blend brimming with character, making the sweetness from the dosage work harmoniously with the high acidity, prompting curiosity about how it might fare with a lower dosage. It earned an impressive score of 93/100.
