By | 9 November 2024

Evelyne de Pontbriand, a prominent figure in the Loire Valley winemaking scene, has passed away at the age of 73. She died peacefully in her sleep on November 5, 2024, in Angers, leaving the local wine community in shock.

Born after World War II into a distinguished lineage of female winemakers, Evelyne initially pursued a career in education but returned to her roots in 2001 when she took the helm of Domaine du Closel – Château des Vaults. This marked a turning point not only for her family estate but also for the broader Savennières appellation.

Her leadership was characterized by a commitment to sustainability. Evelyne converted the vineyards to organic and biodynamic practices, working closely with a local geologist to meticulously catalog and assess each vineyard parcel. This attention to terroir complemented her innovative winemaking techniques, which emphasized the use of indigenous yeasts and minimal sulfur, aiming to reflect the true essence of Savennières.

Evelyne’s wines garnered critical acclaim, helping to enhance the reputation of Savennières. In addition to her winemaking prowess, she excelled in the commercial realm, expanding markets across Europe, North America, and Asia. From 2008 to 2016, she served as the president of the Savennières appellation and took proactive steps to unify the local vignerons through collaboration and consensus-building.

Beyond her professional achievements, Evelyne was a champion of Chenin Blanc, promoting the grape variety on an international stage and co-founding the Académie du Chenin. Her vibrant personality, energy, and infectious smile left a lasting impact on those who met her.

Evelyne is survived by her husband, Gael, and their four children, as well as six grandchildren. Her family has committed to honoring her legacy in Savennières, ensuring that her vision and passion continue to influence the region’s winemaking for years to come.
