I have visited Brat a few times, though not as frequently as I ought to have, considering it’s a Michelin one-star restaurant located in Shoreditch. My previous experience from 2019 can be found here. My most recent trip was delightful, as I had a relaxed lunch with two colleagues.
This restaurant specializes in open-fire cooking, inspired by Basque traditions. The term ‘brat’ refers to turbot, and if your budget and appetite allow, the whole grilled turbot is a must-try signature dish. However, the menu offers a wide variety of options, and we found plenty to savor without choosing this or the beef rib, another of their fire-cooked specialties. [I’ve enjoyed both on previous visits and they were unforgettable.]
The dining area is situated on the first floor and exudes an informal yet stylish atmosphere. It simply feels right to be there, and nearly every aspect of the experience is excellent, including the impressive wine selection. The wine list boasts a fantastic array of intriguing wines, with a particularly strong emphasis on natural and authentic selections. While it’s not the cheapest venue for drinks in London, the pricing is quite reasonable, especially in the £50-80 bracket where great options abound. In my opinion, it features one of the top wine lists in the city.
Brat belongs to the Super 8 Restaurants family, which features a more casual Brat location at Climpsons Arch. The group is also known for esteemed recent establishments like Mountain, Kiln, and Smoking Goat, the latter being a superb Thai restaurant that offers a commendable wine selection, also situated in Shoreditch.
