The BIH Spotlight Awards has emerged as a significant platform that highlights the achievements of individuals and organizations throughout the UK, fostering diversity and inclusion within the hospitality, food, and drink industries. In alignment with our dedication to promoting diversity, Decanter is privileged to participate in honoring the remarkable contributions of writers whose creativity and talent introduce fresh perspectives to these fields.
This year’s awards ceremony is set for Monday, 21 October, at the acclaimed M Threadneedle Street venue in London, where we will celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of talented individuals from black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds in the hospitality sector.
Our very own Julie Sheppard, who serves as Decanter’s Spirits and Regional Editor for Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, will once again be part of the distinguished judging panel. With her extensive background in wine writing and journalism, Julie’s participation ensures that the unique voices and contributions of the finalists are assessed with the depth of understanding they truly warrant.
As we look forward to the awards ceremony, we shine a light on the finalists in the Writer of the Year category, each of whom has exemplified extraordinary creativity, authenticity, and commitment to their craft.
“Receiving a nomination for an award holds immense significance for me as it reflects years of dedication, passion, and hard work in my craft. It serves as a recognition of my efforts to showcase my Sierra Leonean heritage to the world through culinary arts. These nominations extend beyond personal success; they embody the acknowledgment of African cuisine on a global platform, which has always been a cherished aspiration of mine. Each nomination feels like a tribute to my journey, the community that has supported me, and the vibrant culture I proudly represent.”
A renowned culinary figure, Bradford has channeled her love for Sierra Leonean cuisine into a flourishing enterprise. Through her brand, Shwen Shwen, she introduces people to the rich flavors of Sierra Leone with a distinctive Afro-fusion approach. Her cookbook, Sweet Salone, has attracted international recognition to her homeland’s culinary offerings, and her work has been highlighted in prominent publications such as The Guardian and BBC Good Food. Bradford’s nomination is not just a celebration of her accomplishments, but also indicative of the rising acknowledgment of African cuisine on the world stage.
“We are currently witnessing a peculiar phase in the realm of British restaurant writing – it’s a rapidly diminishing field, previously one of the least diverse genres within journalism in the country. Therefore, being nominated for my reviews, which have consistently aimed to emphasize the strength found in the diversity of London’s restaurants and honor the contributions of those who nourish the city, is deeply meaningful.”
Nunn, a London-based writer, is the founder and co-editor of Vittles, an online publication that delves into the intricate relationships among food, culture, and community. He has emerged as a key voice in restaurant criticism, utilizing his platform to spotlight the diversity within London’s dining landscape. His writings challenge traditional narratives, and his nomination stands as a testament to his commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices in food journalism.
“I appreciate the nomination! Few organizations are as dedicated to supporting individuals from underrepresented backgrounds and cultures, so it truly means a lot to be included in this conversation.”

His publications, including Belly Full, West Winds, and East Winds, celebrate Caribbean culinary traditions while recounting the vibrant history of the community in the UK. Phillips not only shares delicious recipes but also narrates the stories behind them, playing a vital role in preserving and showcasing Caribbean culture. His nomination underscores the significance of celebrating and documenting diverse culinary practices.
‘I’m thrilled to be one of the finalists, and being recognized in two categories is truly an honor. Having spent many years in the industry, being acknowledged in these awards, especially in the South Asian Food category, is incredibly meaningful. The other finalists are remarkable, and these awards shine a light on the talented diversity within the hospitality sector — it’s a privilege to join this celebration.’
